It’s officially that time of year again … fall!
Fall weather is never too cold, but it also never gets too hot. That gives us the best of both worlds, right? While it may get a bit chilly out, that doesn’t mean your outside fun has to stop.
This time of year brings tons of events on and off campus that are all free or affordable. Don’t worry about being stuck in your dorm all weekend. Here are a few fun fall festivals and events happening in the Hampton Roads area throughout October:
Five-Alarm Festival
and Chili Cook Off
Not only does the Five-Alarm Festival provide excellent chili, but it also is a chance to brush up on your fire safety. Hosted by Hampton Fire and Rescue in Hampton on Saturday, Oct. 5, this event is free and features activities for all ages. The free admission includes chili tastings as well as other items and beverages. You can even apply to have your famous chili recipe featured at the event for a chance to win great prizes.
Yorktown Wine Festival
Looking for a more relaxed setting? The Yorktown Wine Festival features an array of wine samples from all over the world for a one-time price of $30. Not a wine drinker? This year’s festival features a craft beer garden at no extra cost with limited samples. There will be live music and food from Yorktown eateries for a small additional charge. You get to take in the crisp air and listen to music all while enjoying great food and a nice glass of wine.
Virginia Beach Cupcake Festival
This free, family-friendly event not only satisfies your sweet tooth but it also fulfills your workout goals. Unique Events of Hampton Roads hosts this yearly event at Mount Trashmore Park to “unify the community and raise money for CHKD.” The event kicks off with the annual 5K Cupcake Classic (additional $40 to participate) and
follows with a day full of music, food, entertainment, 50-plus vendors and more than 1,000 cupcake flavors!
Celebrating a great cause and having fun is definitely a win-win situation.
“I’m super excited to go to the festival because I love working out!” sophomore Yveneka Lestin said. “Who doesn’t enjoy a sweet treat once in a while?”
Phoebus Fall Festival
This annual festival is Oct. 12 in Downtown Phoebus. Historic Phoebus turns into a vibrant street festival that is completely free and open to the general public. There will be community exhibits, handmade arts and crafts hour, food trucks, live music and craft beer. You don’t want to miss out on this fun-filled day.
Even with the chilly weather approaching, there are still several fun and exciting things to do in the
Hampton Roads area. So, grab your friends or significant other and head out for a great time.
